But I wouldn’t want to miss a chance to at least TRY one of their gowns. Louisa Michael, one of the designer attended to me on that day. She voiced out her opinion on what should be taken into consideration, when choosing a gown for my body shape. Their rental prices starts from RMXXXX, and their custom made gowns can double/triple that amount! But their quality and workmanship is Exquisite!! Their lace feels so soft and not itchy, and the pattern on the lace is beautifully designed. Be warned, however, they do not have a wide range of dresses for you to browse – but it’s enough for me to make my decision. In the end, I’ve decided to custom made my gown, which is a modified version from one of the dresses in their collection. I’ve got no regrets, despite spending a little bit more, but I just couldn’t compromise on the quality that other shops had to offer. Moreover, this is my ONE and ONLY wedding gown, which makes it even more special. Many of them are variations on just the one theme, and that theme is decidedly princess. Everything features delicate floral embroidery, tulle of some variety and big poufy skirts. Some were mermaid, some were A-line and some were trumpet, but all of them had volume. And all of them were strapless. I tried on four dresses, one of which wouldn’t go past my hips, two of which didn’t do up and one of which, mercifully, fit. (This is not to cast aspersions on the sizing, as I hardly expect them to offer sizes zero to 16, but I did feel a bit of a whale.) They were all lovely, but very similar, and both Aim and I were surprised at actually how narrow the selection was, given that there were probably a hundred gowns in there. I’m determined to have sleeves on my gown, and there was nothing in Pretty in White that I could consider, except a few gratuitous boleros and a bizarre mermaid-tailed ivory cheongsam. It was also plain that some of the gowns had seen many alterations – par for the course for a rental facility, but the sewing work shouldn’t be that obvious. I asked about the possibility of adding sleeves, which prompted the other Emma to rummage around in the store room for ages to look for a recalcitrant set of sleeves that never surfaced. That would be a no, then. It is a beautiful store, I’m just incredibly fussy.

After visiting numerous Made to Measure (MTM) shops in Sri Hartamas such as That Special Occasion, The Wedding Isle, and Pretty in White, I finally decided to go with Pretty in White as their prices are quite reasonable. The gown that we’ve designed is inspired mainly by 2 Vera Wang dresses that I’ve fallen in love with and our theme of the wedding night which is Shanghai Tang! I’ve been fully measured and the actual making of the gown will probably take 2 months, so lets hope the dress turns out well when I go for the fitting. FYI, pretty in white also has a buy-back option and for the dress which is measured for me, they are buying it back at 30% of the price which is savings for me, and also, lack of clutter… Some say I should keep it for memory.
